While other books like Mort and a thief of time are many fans favourites over Guards Guards, most will agree it was this book that made them fall in love with the series. It is generally agree to be the best first book of the Discworld series to read as it while easy to read brings you smack down into world quickly, and introduces many key characters for later books.

Guards Guards started the City Watch story lines that still capture peoples imagination but it is all based on the brilliance of this book. The characters have such depth through Terry’s carefully chosen comic styling, bringing out real characters you want to know and love.

The book starts with the City Watch in a poor state, when a young (but surprisingly very tall) dwarf called Carrot arrives to volunteer when people throughout Ankh-Morpork start combusting in flames. With dragons, wit, love, rat based spies and great characters, there are few who could not adore such literally genius that truly sparks imagination and thirst for more.

Fantasy and comedy, both at their best!

I’ve been put off Pratchett’s books in the past because I thought they were just for guys… but they are SO funny. Guards! Guards! has opened my eyes, wide, to the magic of discworld, and appeals completely to a sense of humour that still has me giggling at Blackadder or Python. Thankyou City Reads! Great work as usual.

Guards, Guards! is a very funny look at the local police force in Ankh Morpork. With new creature added to the force. It’s been a long time since I read this book but I do remember that this one is my favorite (Feet of Clay is my second fav.)
If you have never read a Terry Pratchett book this is an excellent one to start with. It’s full of political satire and makes you think about your own government running a similar way. Very easy to get through. Better than any film i have seen.
A laugh a minute, excellent storytelling and classic Sir Terry Pratchett.
Bless him for giving me bellyache after bellyache of laughter. He is my favorite author, hands down.
